Abstract

357,608. Hair-waving appliances. ROBINSON, R. J., 90, Tachbrook Street, London. May 26, 1930, No. 16196. [Class 131.] In electric heaters for use in hair waving of the kind comprising two hingedly-connected arcuate segments 1, 2, Figs. 1 and 10, each of which carries an electric heating unit 9, the two segments are connected by a hinge pin 3 engaged by projections 20, 21 and 22, 23 provided respectively on the upper edges of the inner plates of the segments 1, 2 and bent around the hinge pin, the segments being held closed by a coiled spring 4 surrounding the hinge pin. The segments 1, 2 each comprise an inner plate and a cover-plate 10, the inner plate being turned up at the bottom 8<1> and provided at the top with downwardly-turned lugs 7, 8 to secure the cover-plate in position on top of the heating unit 9, which comprises a resistance wire wound on a sheet of mica or other insulating material and disposed between similar sheets. Handles 5, 6, attached by metal tags 24, 25 to the cover-plates 10, are provided for opening the segments. The heating resistances are connected in series by a wire 9<1> provided with glass beads or other insulation, the other ends of the resistances being attached to terminals 11 mounted on the cover-plates 10 and connected by a lead 15 to a terminal 16. A clamping device and a curler for use with the beaters are shown in Figs. 3 and 6 respectively. The clamp comprises arms 27, 28 pivoted together at one end, the arm 28 being provided at the other end with a link 34 carrying a pivoted locking-member 37 which coacts with a recess 38 on the arm 27. The clamp is provided at the ends with forked uprights 32, 33 for carrying the curler, and insulating pads 29, 30, Fig. 10, of spongy rubber are secured to the undersides of the arms. The curler comprises a wooden reel 41 provided with a hinged clip 43 and rotatable on a central pin 41<1> fitted with a locking nut 45. In use, a tress of hair is engaged near the root by the clamp 27, 28, and is wound on the curler 41, the coil being held by the clip 43. The curler is mounted in the forked members 32, 33 on the clamp, is rotated to tighten the coil, and is then locked by rotating the nut 45 until it engages the adjacent forked member 32 or 33. The coil is then covered by a perforated shield 46, e.g. of aluminium, fabric such as gauze being interposed between the coil and the shield if desired, and the heater. is positioned over the shield. A portable case for containing the heaters and accessories comprises a box 48, Fig. 13, provided with a switch 70, a fuse box 69, an indicating lamp 71, a main terminal 72 connected to sub-terminals 59 .. 62 each of which is adapted to be connected by a lead 68 and terminals 64 .. 67 to four heaters, a compartment for accessories, and bars 50 .. 55 in the lid 49 whereon the heaters are clipped.
