[Class 100 (i).] In a means for associating paper sheets travelling at different speeds in paper-folding apparatus having a transfer cylinder driven with varying speed which takes up the slowerrunning sheets at their own speed and transfers them with acceleration to the quicker-running receiving cylinder, the transfer cylinder is driven from a shaft 26 by gearing which is independent of the gear wheels of the folder, which is driven from a shaft 11. The quicker-running web 1 is led between a cutting cylinder 2 and the receiving cylinder 3, and the first cut sheet or set of sheets is passed on to a collecting cylinder 4 which carries it round to the point of contact to associate it with a second sheet or set of sheets on the cylinder 3. The slower-running web 5 enters between the cutting cylinders 6, 7, from which the cut sheet or set of sheets passes over the cylinders 8, 9 to the transfer cylinder 10 and thence to the receiving cylinder 3 to associate with the rest of the sheets. The combined sheets are folded by the cylinder 3a and delivered therefrom. All the cylinders, except the transfer cylinder 10, are driven through gears from the shaft 11, the drive being carried past the cylinder 10 by the provision of loosely mounted spur wheels on the shaft of the latter. On the opposite end of the shaft of the cylinder 10 is secured a non- circular spur-wheel 25 which meshes with a similar wheel 24 loosely mounted on the shaft of the cylinder 9 and driven by bevel wheels 27, 28 from the shaft 26. The non-circular spur-wheels 24, 25 may be replaced by other gear, such as a crank gear.
