Abstract

387,428. Paper-folding machines. HOE & CO., Ltd., R., 109, Borough Road, London.-(Hoe & Co., Inc., R. ; 138th Street, New York, U.S.A.) Oct. 13, 1931, No. 28449. [Class 100 (ii).] In a folding-mechanism particularly for printing-presses, a stationary inclined pathway is provided along which the printed products are fed, and means are provided for stopping a plurality of successive products which are then folded simultaneously. The sheets after being cut from a printed web and folded by cylinders 3, 4, Fig. 1, pass on to a pair of inclined plates 5, 6, Fig. 2, over which they are fed by spring-pressed rollers 11, 12 and driven rollers 17, 18 engaging the lateral edges of the sheets, the plates 5, 6 being slotted for this purpose. Following the rollers 11, 12 are drop rollers 31 coacting with driven rollers 29 and operating in timed relationship with rising and falling front stops 21 to register the sheet prior to its being folded between the plates 5, 6 into the bite of folding-rollers 61, 62 by a blade 51. Lateral registering of the sheets is obtained by pusher-members 86, Fig. 2, moving the sheets against side-gauges 85. Beyond the stops 21 another sheet-feeding and registering section is arranged similar to that already described except that the front stops 36, 37 are fixed, comprising sheet-forwarding rollers 39, 40, 42<1>, 43 and drop-rollers 45. In operation, one product from the cylinders 3, 4 passes under the stops 21 up to the .stops 36, 37 whereas the succeeding product is brought to rest by the stops 21 and the two products are folded simultaneously by blades 50, 51 mounted on a .common shaft 54. Arms 52, 53, Fig. 1, mounted on a shaft 56 carry the shaft 54 which has fixed thereto a gear wheel 57 engaging a fixed internal gear 58 so as to operate the blades. The folding-rollers 61, 62 can be adjusted towards or away from one another by hand-wheels 73, 82, Fig. 2, operating through worm-andworm wheel mechanism 71<1>, 801 respectively on spindles 71, 80 carrying the end bearings 64, 75 of the shafts. The feeding rollers are driven from the shaft 90 of the folding cylinder 3, and the pushers 86 are operated by links 106 from a shaft 103 coupled by bevel gearing 101, 102 to the shaft 90. A transverse shaft 109 carries cams 110, 112 operating the drop rollers and rising and falling stops and is coupled by bevel gearing 125, 126 to the shaft 56. A gear 127 on the shaft 56 drives, through intermediate gearing 128, 130, a gear 131<1> which drives the folding- roller 62 directly and the folding-roller 61 indirectly through a gear 134, Fig. 2. The folded products are delivered to stackers 83, 84.
