SHEET FOLDING AND DELIVERING MECHANISM' Application filed March 28, 1930. Serial No. 439,628.
' r The invention relates to new and useful improvements in sheet cutting, folding and delivering mechanisms, and more epecially, in certain of its aspects, to such mechanisms especially capacitated for use with high speed rotary printing presses.
- Objects and advantages of the invention will be set forth in part hereinafter and in part will be obvious herefrom, or may be learned by practice with the invention, the same being realized and attained by means of the instrumentalities and combinations pointed out in the appended claims.

The invention is directed to mechanism capacitated to receive rapidlyrunning webs, and to cut off therefrom sheets, or groups of sheets in the case of associated webs, .and'to fold offthe sheets, or groups thereof optionally to a single delivery mechanism or to a plurality of'such mechanisms. In either case, the mechanism, through alternate folding-0d actionor through collection, effects a relatively slow delivery of the; folded-off products with respect to the speed of the web. In accordance with one feature of the invention, the entire product may be collected and folded oflto a selected one of a'plurality of delivery devices, or the; mechanism may be. run straight to fold ofl and deliver sequentially to said plurality of delivery devices.
One. object ofthe invention is to provide mechanism havingthe alternative functions described, whereinthe different devices and groups of mechanisms. are of developed and tested forms, conducing to simplicity and reliability of operation, thereby avoiding stoppages, breakages and otherfaults anddefects. as. well as realizing the. advantages already outlined.
In the exemplary and present preferred embodiment, two three-way, cutting, collecting and folding. cylinders coact together to receive the web lead and to cut off the sheets therefrom in a lmown manner. The sheets are taken either alternately by the two cylinders, or in succession by one of them. In the latter case the other cylinder cooperates only to cut off the sheets, the sheet-taking and folding-off mechanism thereof being silent. Either cylinder may be silent in the manner described, and in such case, When either cylinder is silenced (except for cutting), the other cylinder acts as acollecting andfolding-oif cylinder.
It will be understood that the foregoing general description, and the succeeding detailed description as well, are explanatory and exemplary of the invention but are not re,- strictive thereof.
Referring now in detail to the embodiment of the invention illustrated by way of example in the accompanying drawings, a suitable source of web supply is provided, and in the case of a rotary printing press, one or more four-page-wide perfected webs are centrally longitudinally slit, associated when required, and are run over a pair offormers and thence to the sheet-cutting folding and delivery mechanism of the present invention. The folder actuating deice is of the general Husby cam type,'comprising a rotating disc 57, rotatably mounted at 58 upon the machine frame. projecting end ofshaft 73 are cross arms 74, in the ends of which are mounted cam rollers 75 and 76, which run upon the ring cam 54. In like" manner the folding device 43 comprises a carrier 81, mounted on which is a single folding blade 82, the carrier being fixed on a shaft 83, which is journaled on the cylinder. Fixed to the projecting end of shaft 83 is a cross arm 84, journaled in which are a pair-of cam rollers 85 and 86', running on the cam track 54.
Referring now to cylinder 9, which is equipped with similar sheet taking, holding and releasing devices, there are shown three sets-of impaling pins 91, 92 and 93, mounted in cooperative relation with the sheet-cutting devices'll, 12 and 13 of this cylinder. The pins 91 are mounted on arms 97, fixed on a shaft 98, journaled in the cylinder heads, onev end of the shaft projecting therefrom. To the projecting end of the shaft is fixed an arm 99, in which is journaled a cam roller 100, which runs. in a cam 101. The pin mechanism 92 is similarly constructed and has the same reference numerals applied thereto with a added. The pin mechanism 93 is likewise of similar construction and has the same reference numerals applied thereto with an added b. These are both likewise actuated by cam 101. Cam 101 is fixed to a gear wheel 102, loosely journaled on the shaft 10 of cylinder 9. Cam 101 is an interchangeable cam, similar to cam 25, and ismounted on its gear wheel in like man- Figs, and 6 will serve also to illustrate cam 101. Gear wheel 26 for cam 25 of cylinder 1, and gear wheel 102 for cam 101 of cylinder 9 intermesh and rotate one for one, and are driven by suitable mechanisms later to be described.
In the embodied folding means, medianly positioned with reference to the sheet carrying surfaces of the cylinder 9 are three folding devices 111, 112 and 113. The device I 111 is provided with a carrier 115, on which is mounted a single foldlng blade 16, the carrier being fixed on a shaft 117, jo'urnaled on the cylinder and having one end thereof projecting beyond the cylinder. To said projecting end of shaft 117 fixed across arm 118, in the ends of which are journaled cam rollers 119 and 120, running on the circular cam track 121, mounted in fixed position upon the machine frame.
The folding device 112 is of similar construction, havinga carrier 131 having a sin gle folding blade 132, fixed on a shaft 133. journaled on the cylinder. A cross arm 134 is fixed on the projecting end of shaft 133, and cam rollers 135 and 136 are journaled in the ends of the cross arm and run upon the ring cam 121. Folding device 113 has a carrier 139 provided with a single folding blade 140, the carrier being fixed on the shaft 141,.journaled on the cylinder, and to the projecting end thereof is fixed a cross arm 142, in the ends of which are journaled cam rollers 143 and 144, likewise running on the ring cam 121. The actuating mechanism for this folder comprises the rotary disc 151 rotatably mounted at 152 upon the machine frame, the disc being provided with tangentially-disposed cam slots 153 and 154.; The cam fixed to a gear 155, which meshes with a gear 156, fixed on the shaft of cylinder 9. The product is folded off to folding rollers 161 and 162 and delivered to a delivery mechanism shown as comprising a star wheel 163, which may deliver to the usual form of delivery belt or any other suitable construction.
In the embodied form of driving means for the pin-actuating cams and 101, gear wheel 26 of the intermeshing gears 26 and meshes with a gear wheel 171, fixed on a shaft 17 2, journaled in the side frame 4 and in a bracket 175. Fixed also to shaft 172 is a gear wheel 176, which meshes with a gear wheel 177, fixed on the shaft 2 of cylinder 1. Fixed on shaft 2 is a gear whee] 178, which meshes with a gear wheel 179 fixed on the shaft 10 of cylinder 9, and rotating in one-to-one relation. The rotation of the cams 25 and 101 to their respective cylinders 1 and 9 is in the ratio of three to two, and in the same direction. The gears may be proportioned in any desired manner to effect this, and as shown they are in the following ratio which gives the desired ratio.
As stated, the shape of the cam tracks for either cylinder 1 or 9 is changed whenever the particular cylinder is to be run either straight or collect. \Vhen either of the cylinders is run collect, the impaling pins on the other cylinder are silenced by means of the respective bolt and slot connections 29.
In the operation of the mechanism, and considering either cam 25a or 101, and the both cylinders as on a straight run (Figs. 1, 5 and 7). the cam makes three revolutions to two revolutions of cylinder 1 and in the same direction. Impaling pins A (which may be any given set of pins) are in the projected position and take the web lead at 13 on the cam. The pins A then rotate 150 to the point Y, where they are retracted into the cylinder to release the sheets, which at that instant are cut off and folded into the folding-off rollers and 66. The low point L on the cam, which is behind the pins A, when in the position of Fig. 7 (that is, when taking; the web lead), rotates 225 while the pins A are rotating 150 from w to (that i'-'. from sheet-taking to sheet-relid leasing positions), and thereby the cam roller M for the pins A and the low L on the cam coincide at Y and the pins are retracted, thereby. releasing the sheets as they are foldedolf. V.
When the set of pins Bare at position A; they must be retracted within the cylinder, as the lead ofvthe web is then taken by the impaling pins on cylinder 9. The rotation of pins B from the position of Fig. 7 to position A'is 120,and during this rotation of pins 13, thecam rotates 180 from the position of Fig. 7, and this puts thelow" side of the cam at position A, and pins B are thereby retracted withinthe cylinder and do not take the web lead. w pVVhen" pins j C have reached position A,
they must project, as cylinder 1 again takes thevweb leadas, was the case with pins A.
The rotation of the pins from their position in'Fig. 7 to position A is 240, and duringv this rotation the cam rotates 360 (and is thus again in the position shown in Fig. 7) ,and pins C are projected and take the lead of the web. The entire cycle then repeats with the pins C,1in the manner already described with relation to pins A, and later the same thing occurs with respect to the pins B. Thus,
every'alternate time the web lead is taken by cylinder 1 and on the other time by cylinder 9, "the folding-oil -occurring' as has already been described.
Considering now the machine as set for collectingby cylinder 1, the interchangeable split cam "shown in Fig. 5 has been replaced by the cam shown in Figs. 6 and 8. The cam, of course, still makes three revolutions to two revolutionsof the cylinder 1, and in the same direction as the cylinder. In the position shown in Fig. 8, the pins A are projected and take thelead end of the web, the corresponding sheet-taking surface having come up to this position bare after the col lected product has been folded off. At this time pins B have one sheet or group, and will take another sheet or group thereon when position Ais reached. The pins C are just about to release the collected product at the instant of folding-off.
Pins A are projected at position A of Fig. 8, and must stay out during one complete rotation of cylinder 1, to impale the web lead which is just being taken in Fig. 8 and to' then'again impale the web lead to-collect the second sheet or group upon the first, and must remain out until pointlY'is reached. where the pins must be retracted to release the collected product at the instant of folding-off. The complete rotation of the pin-s A from the point of taking the first web lead, past the taking of the second web lead, and to the position Y with the collected product is 510, and the cam rotates during this time 765. Thus the low part L of the cam and the actuating roller for the pins A coincide at the point Y, and thereby the pins A are, retracted, and the collected product folded oil Pins B must project beyond thecylinder until they reach point Ato take the second web lead to complete the collection of the two products, and: must continue projected until they reach the point Ya At that point they must be retracted within the cylinder to release the collected product at the instant of folding-off. The rotation ofpin-s B from the position shown in Fig. 8, to the point Y is2l and during'the' same time the cam rotates from the position shown in Fig. 8, through 405, which brings the low L of the cam to the point Y coincidentally withthe actuating roller forthe pins B, which are retracted and the collected product is folded off.'-
Pins C must rotate from the position shown in Fig. 8 through 30 to the point Y, and during that time the lowpoint Lon the cam rotates 45, which brings them together at Y, andthe. pins C, are retracted, and the collected product is folded off. The sequence then begins againwith pins A.
It will be understood that the plates wil be positioned on the opposite halves ;of the form cylinders of the Various printing cou ple's so as to get a properly folded product at either delivery. i
The invention in its broader aspects is not limited to the specific mechanisms shown and described but departures may be made therefrom within the scope ofthe accompanying claimswithout departing from the principles of the invention and withoutsacrificing its chief advantages. i i l What I claim is a 1. 10. A sheet-folding and delivering mechanism including in combination two coacting cylinders, provided with an equal number of sheet taking and releasing means and an equal number of foldingdevices, and means whereby the total folded products-may be .de-
livered from one or from both of said-cylinders.

A sheet folding and delivering mechanism including in combination two coacting cylinders, provided with an equal number of sheet taking and releasing means and an equal number of folding devices, a plurality of delivery devices, and means whereby the total folded products may be delivered to one or both of said folders.
12. A sheet folding'a-nd delivering mechanism including in combination two coacting cylinders, provided with an equal number of sheet taking and releasing neanfs and an equal number of folding devices, means-for silencing the sheet taking and releasing means on one of said cylinders, and means for receiving'the folded oil products.
13. A sheet folding and delivering mechanism including in combination two coacting cylinders, provided with an equal number of sheet taking and releasing means and an equal number of folding devices, means for silencing the sheet taking and releasing means on either of said cylinders and means for receiving the folded off products.
14. A sheet folding and delivering mechanism including in combination two coacting cylinders provided with an equal number of sheet taking and releasing means and an equal number of folding devices, a pair of folding off rollers cooperating with one of said cylinders, a pair of folding rollers cooperating with the othercyliiider, and means for silencing the sheet taking and releasing means on one of said cylinders.
