[Class 17 (i).] In a machine for shaping and smoothing soles, before or after attachment to shoes, wherein the sole is pressed, by hydraulic pressure, between fixed and movable dies, cylinders B, B<1> mounted in a frame A<1> are connected by pipes J, K to a change-over valve L, which is further connected, by pipes M, O respectively, to a pump N and a chamber P filled with oil or water. The valve L is so constructed that the pipes M, O can be connected to each other, or to the pipes J, K alternatively. Pistons C, C<1> arranged in the cylinders B, B<1> and slidable through packing E carry die-holding members R. Each of these comprises a die chuck S which is universally mounted on the member R by means of spherical surfaces and bolts U and slots. The chuck is held normally in a central position by a spring ring T, Fig. 3. The upper dies W, W<1> are removably held in the chucks by screws V. Lower dies Y, Y<1> are held similarly on posts X. The cylinders are connected at their lower ends by a passage G, so that one piston, as it descends, forces fluid into the other cylinder to raise the piston therein.
