Abstract

383,846. Cigar making machines. TRIGGS, W. W., 57, Lincoln's Inn Fields, London.-(International Cigar Machinery Co. ; 5520, 2nd Avenue, Brooklyn, New York, U.S.A.) March 15, 1932, No. 7719. [Class 130.] In order to increase the speed of laying and cutting cigar wrappers, two or more cutting beds or dies are brought successively into position for laying the leaf sections thereon and then into position for delivery of the wrappers to the wrapper-carrying device, the dies engaging stationary pressure rollers which effect the cutting operation as each die passes from one position to the other. Figs. 1 and 2 show a horizontal turret 13 carrying a pair of opposed dies 33 and arranged to be rotated intermittently through half-revolutions so as to bring each die from the position shown at the bottom of Fig. 1, which is the laying position, into the upper position, from which the cut wrapper is delivered to the wrappercarrying device for conveyance to the wrapping- mechanism, the die passing under pressure rollers 15 which effect the cutting. The leaf sections are held upon the dies by suction transmitted from a pipe 22 through a valve 25, which is oscillated to and fro about the turret shaft 12 by gearing 35, 36 and cam 41. During one movement of the valve 25, the turret is locked thereto by a bolt 44, but during the return movement of the valve the bolt 44 is released, and the turret is held stationary by another bolt 59. These two bolts are simultaneously moved in opposite directions by arms 51, 52, 54 and a cam 56. The valve 25 is constructed so that suction is communicated to holes 97, 99 to retain the whole leaf during the half-rotation of the turret from the laying to the transferring position. When in the latter position, the suction is cut off from the inner holes 97, so as to release the cutter wrapper for transference, whereas the suction on the outer holes 99 remains so as to retain the surplus leaf portion, until the die returns again almost to the laying position, when the outer suction is cut off to allow removal of the surplus previous to the laying of a fresh leaf. The wrapper-carrying device 17 for transferring the cut wrapper to the device 19 for winding it on the bunch C is carried by, and supplied with suction through, a head 80, arms 79, 77, and a pedestal 16, about which the arm 77 is oscillated by gearing 70, 71, arm 74, and cam 76. Movement of the carrier 17 during its oscillation is effected by arms 81, 84, 86 engaging at 82 and 85 in slots in a stationary cam plate 18. Die blocks arranged within the dies 33 are raised a small distance above the knife edge in the laying position, so as to protect the operator's hands, these blocks being lowered below the knives as the die passes under the rollers 15.
