[Classes 92 (ii) and 119.] To facilitate removal and replacement of the barrel x, a handle device 15 is provided for effecting the locking and unlocking of the barrel with the breech casing or barrel extension, said handle serving to perform other operations, such as tilting, sliding, or carrying the barrel, which are necessary to changing the barrel. The invention is shown in Fig. 1 applied to a recoiling- barrel gun slidably supported at the muzzle end in a tiltable sleeve z as described in Specification 381,747. The rear end of the barrel is provided with transverse ribs 5 which are inserted in grooves 3 in the barrel extension 8, and the handle 15 is pivoted at 35, Fig. 4, to a plate 16 which slides rearwards in guides 22 on the gun casing 1 to lock the barrel in position as shown in Fig. 6. In this position of the handle, the plate 16 is locked to the gun casing and released from a projection 26 on the barrel. To release the barrel, the handle is movable to an intermediate position, Fig. 10, to permit of sliding the plate forwards, and to a vertical position, Fig. 11, in which the plate is locked with the barrel projection 26 by interengaging lugs 30, 31, the handle thus serving to remove and carry the barrel. If, after inserting the barrel, the handle is inadvertently left in the position shown in Fig. 11 it is automatically turned to locking position during recoil by the engagement of a projection 51 on the lever with an incline 60 on the gun casing.
