Abstract

693,907. Automatic guns. SOC. ITALIANA E. BREDA PER COSTRUZIONI MECCANICHE. March 15, 1950 [March 17, 1949], No. 6465/50. Class 119 The sliding breech bolt 3 of an automatic gun has pivoted thereto a locking block 1 which in unlocked position precludes firing, the block having an elongated slot to receive the pivot pin 2 to provide a sliding movement as well as a pivotal movement during the locking and unlocking operation. The invention is shown in one form, Fig. 2, applied to a long-recoil breech action. The breech bolt 3 slides in an extension a of the barrel b and has a pin 2 engaging an elongated slot in a locking-block 1, a projection 1a on which locks with a recess a<SP>1</SP> in the barrel-extension when the breech is closed. The block is urged to closed position by a spring- pressed rod 5 pivoted at 4 to the block. The block has slidable therein a firing rod 10 intermediate between a hammer 9 and striker 11. On firing, the locked barrel and breech bolt recoil fully to the rear and on runout the locking block is engaged by a tooth 7 to swing it downwardly to the unlocking position shown and the barrel returns alone causing the empty cartridge case to be extracted. The block is retained by a lever 17, Fig. 3, until the barrel returns when lever 17 is released by incline 20, and the tooth 7 is actuated to release the breech bolt to load a fresh cartridge, the locking block finally rising to locking position. Safety is provided since, in the unlocked position of the bolt, the firing rod 10 is out of line with the striker 11. For hand working, the locking block is operated directly by a handle 8 which after tilting the block moves the breech bolt rearwards. The handle may be replaced by a hand-operated slide which carries a projection engaging a projection on the block. In a modification, Fig. 6, the striker 24 slides as a whole in the breech bolt and the rocking of the block to unlocking position causes a surface 26 thereon to engage a projection 25 on the striker to block its firing movement.
