Abstract

668,463. Small arms. MERK, M. May 13, 1948. [May 17, 1947] No. 13176/48. Class 119. Relates to a shot gun or like firearm of the repeater type, the breech of which is opened and closed for loading and cocking by a manual forward and backward sliding movement of the barrel A relatively to a lock casing B fixed to the butt-stock C. According to the invention, the breech block 2 has a longitudinal sliding movement relatively to the lock casing and is transversely movable relatively to a U-shaped locking cavity x in a rear extension of the barrel for locking and unlocking the block. In the form shown, the breech block 2 is carried by a member 7 slidable on the lock frame and has a tail piece 2a with slot 8 engaging a pin 8a fixed to the lock frame and a pin 9 engaging a parallel slot 9a in the frame so that the block is locked to and unlocked from the barrel by rearward and forward movements of the slide 7 as the breech is closed and opened respectively by sliding the barrel. The slide also carries a pivoted sear 11 for the pivoted hammer 12 hinged with the trigger 23 on a common pivot 24. The sear has a pivot member 11a for engaging the hammer and, when released by pulling the trigger 23, the sear moves into engagement with a stop 18 on the frame, disengagement being effected by release of the trigger. A safety latch 20 engaged by a spring 51 has a lug 20b barring the sear 11 when the hammer is cocked, the latch being released by a grip lever 20a. The forward movement of the hammer causes a lever 15, locking the barrel and slide 7 to be released from notch 14 on the slide. The barrel is locked in forward and rear position by a hinged catch 33 which can be released by hand through member 38 to permit the barrel to slide beyond its forward opening position to detach the barrel from the stock. A reserve cartridge is carried in a forward extension of the lock frame beneath the barrel and is insertable from below through a suitable opening. When the gun is opened by forward movement of the barrel, the spent cartridge case is extracted and the reserve cartridge is lifted upwardly bv spring-pressed lever 30, the rim being retained by a rail 32. When the barrel moves backwardly, the cartridge rim moves beyond the rail and by inclines 25 the cartridge is brought into line with the chamber and inserted therein. When the breech is to be opened for removing a live cartridge, the lever 15 is released from notch 14 by a press button 22. Fig. 8 shows in reversed side view a latch 13 pivoted on the slider 7 for retaining the breech block against a lug 13a on the frame at the lower end of its guideway in the barrel until a cartridge has entered the chamber during the return of the barrel when the rear end of the barrel releases the latch.
