Abstract
382,646. Purifying water. ALLEN, F. D. C., 14, Church Road, Hanwell, London. July 24, 1931, No. 21188. [Class 46.] Apparatus for supplying chlorine or other gaseous or liquid reagent in proportionate quantity to a stream of water comprises two liquid columns in connection respectively with points in the stream where the pressure is different and the difference varies with the rate of flow, a displacement body in each of the liquid columns and mechanism communicating the differential thrust on the bodies to the diaphragm of a valve which controls the flow of reagent. As shown the inlet and throat of a venturi pipe 30, through which the water passes, are connected by pipes 26, 32 to vessels 22, 24 in which bodies 34, 36 are suspended. The bodies are connected to the ends of a lever 38 and one end of the lever engages the end of a thrust rod 40, the other end of which engages the base of a bellows capsule 18 containing liquid which is in communication with one side of a diaphragm 14 controlling a needle valve 12 which governs the supply of reagent. The reagent is in communication with the other side of the diaphragm and its supply pressure is consequently dependent upon the pressure difference of the venturi pipe. The reagent is delivered to the water stream through an orifice or constriction. The bodies 34. 36 may be of sheet metal and loaded with water. The water columns in the vessels 22, 24 may be replaced by columns of mercury.
