[Class 86.] Liquid or gas reagent is added in proportional amounts to a stream of liquid by means of a water meter &c. in the stream which controls the action of a pressure medium upon a movable diaphragm, piston, &c. which pumps the reagent into the stream ; the pressure medium may be the stream itself, and the control may be effected from the water meter through a mechanical or electrical relay. In the form shown, the main stream passes through a pipe 16 fitted with a throttle 17, to a meter 18 which operates valves 3 through crank mechanism 1 to admit liquid, taken from the stream by a pipe 5, to one side of a flexible diaphragm 9, Fig. 2, clamped between the two sides of a casing 8. The liquid is exhausted through a pipe 6 and either runs to waste or may be used for making a solution of the reagent. The diaphragm 9 acts as a pump to feed reagent from the container 20 to the stream through a pipe 15, non-return valves 12, 13 being provided. The capacity of the casing may be adjusted to vary the supply of reagent by fitting it with an adjustable membrane which varies the stroke of the diaphragm 9, or by fitting the casing with two flexible diaphragms between which a variable amount of liquid may be forced. A separate pressure medium, such as compressed air, may be employed, the exhaust driving a reagent stirring apparatus, and the adjustment of the capacity may be effected by a known device, such as hydrogen-ion indicator, through a relay.
