[Class 38 (iv).] A characteristic, such as the voltage current or speed of a dynamo - electric machine is automatically regulated by means of a thermionic diode 5 arranged to control the current through a vapour electric discharge device 1 in its field circuit. The cathode heating current of the diode, which is preferably run at saturation, is subject to the regulated quantity and its conductivity variation is arranged to vary the phase relation of the voltage-control electrode 4 of the device 1 with reference to its anode voltage. The field 3 of the dynamo is supplied from a transformer 2 and the average value of the rectified current passing through the device is determined by the phase of 'the voltage in the control grid. For this purpose the cathode 6 of the diode and the anode of the device 1 are connected to the opposite ends of the transformer secondary, the grid 4 of the device is connected through a resistance 9 to the anode 7 of the diode, and an inductance or condenser 8 is connected between the anodes of the diode and vapourelectric discharge device.
