Regulation, automatic.- The terminal voltage of a generator G is regulated according to the load current flowing through a resistance R1 by a hot cathode discharge device D connected in shunt to the exciting winding B2, a resistance R2 being in series with the circuit of the winding B2 and device D. The filament g of the device D is in circuit with a battery B1 and part of the resistance R1. If the current from the battery B1 opposes the current derived from the resistance R1, then as the load on the generator increases, the heating current of the filament decreases, whereupon the plate current decreases and the current in the winding B2 increases, thus the generator is either regulated for constant voltage or is overcompounded. If the battery current has the same direction as that derived from the resistance R, then the generator is undercompounded. A second device D<2> may similarly be used, and be heated according to the terminal voltage of the generator and thus regulates the terminal voltage as the speed of the machine varies. If the generator G is an alternator the current derived from the resistance R1 is rectified by a synchronous commutator. In a modified arrangement, the filament of the device D is heated by a constant current and the potential of a grid is varied according to the current in the resistance R1. The device D may also be connected in series with the exciting winding or be associated with an auxiliary winding.
