Regulation, automatic.-The voltage of a self exciting generator which has a straight or nearly straight no - load characteristic be - tween the voltage limits desired, is controlled by discharge tubes connected in parallel with the shunt field winding. A discharge tube 4 with anode 5 and cathode 6 is provided with a variable resistance 8 in the heating circuit and a resistance 3 which may be variable is connected in the parallel circuits. The self exciting machine may be an exciter 1 for an alternator 10 as in Fig. 2 (not shown) or a generator 15 as in Fig. 3 (not shown). In Fig. 3 a triode tube is employed having the grid potential varied in accordance with load conditions.
