[Classes 52 (ii) and 52 (iv).] The sides and back of the framework of a chair, settee, &c. are built of a number of horizontally disposed rigid members 5, 9, 11, 14 which are resiliently connected with one another. In the construction described, the resilient connections consist each of a pair of leaf springs 6, 7 pivotally interconnected and spring influenced, the free ends of the springs being connected to the frame members by screws or bolts 8. Where the frame is of heavy material coil springs 15 may be disposed between some or all of the leaf members 6, 7. The arm section 9 has a front upwardly directed member 10 to which are hinged the front ends of the arm rest section 11, to which is attached the back rest section 13 and an intermediate section 14. The expansion of the framework may be limited by providing strips of webbing. The spring seat member 19, Fig. 2, may be connected to the top or underside of the rigid base 4 of the frame by leaf spring members 17, 18. The seat and side members may slope towards the rear by making them sloped or providing resilient connections at the front of greater depth than those at the back. The connections may be of greater strength at the lower portions of the framework. Other forms of resilient connection, e.g. coil springs, may alternatively be employed. The front bar of the frame 4 may be omitted. The frame members may be of pressed metal.
