Abstract

A mixture of fibre, such as asbestos, cement, such as Portland cement and a thermoplastic material such as resin, copal, pitch, bitumen, asphalt or sulphur, is moulded with water, for example as a sheet, and allowed to set. It is heated to diffuse the thermoplastic material through it and then impregnated with a solution of, or the constituents of, an artificial resin, and again heated to harden the resin. In an example the composition consists of 200 lbs. Portland cement, 100 lbs. asbestos and 60 lbs. powdered pitch, and the resin is a phenolformaldehyde resin with, if desired, 5 per cent aniline oil.
