Abstract

Bituminous compositions for use in manufacturing waterproof sheet comprise 20-60% by weight of an asphaltic cement, 30 to 70% by weight of a mineral filler and 5 to 25% by weight of reinforcing fibre. "Asphaltic cement" is defined as asphaltic bitumen and/or natural asphalts, or a mixture of one of them with fine mineral aggregate, prepared for use as a binder for mineral aggregate and is preferably a blend of asphalt and/or asphaltic bitumen with a bituminous or polymeric binder. The binder may be synthetic or natural rubbers, elastomers, tars, oxidized bitumen, thermoplastics (e.g. polymerized olefins) or uncured thermosetting materials (e.g. epoxy or polyester resins) and the viscosity of the cement should exceed 9 kilopoises at 25 DEG C. The asphalt or asphaltic bitumen may include "Gilsonite" (Trade Mark), natural lake asphalts, residual bitumens or light-coloured bitumen and asphaltic resins. When using light bitumens a small proportion of heat-stable pigment may be included in the composition. The ratio of asphaltic cement to mineral filler is about 2:3 and preferably at least 70% of the filler, which may be a pulverized calcareous material or an impalpable material (e.g. amorphous silica, aerosils, diatomaceous fillers, reformed bentonites, kaolin, fly ash, mica or vermiculite, passes a 200 mesh sieve. The reinforcing fibre may be asbestos, glass fibre, slag wool, non-ferrous metal fibre or synthetic fibre. The bituminous compositions may be made by heating the asphaltic cement to a temperature not exceeding 200 DEG C., adding the filler and fibre and working the composition while still warm and malleable into sheet form by extrusion through a die or passage through a pair of rollers. The sheets may be backed with, for example, woven hessian, glass fibre cloth, paper, metal foil, chemically setting resin or varnish and surface stickiness may be inhibited by treatment with a surface-active agent (e.g. silicones, fatty acids or long-chain amines).
