Abstract
381,550. Discharge devices. BRITISH THOMSON-HOUSTON CO., Ltd., Crown House, Aldwych, London.-(Assignees of Murphy, G. F. ; 2722, Campbell Avenue, Schenectady, New York, U.S.A.) June 30, 1931, No. 18897. Convention date, July 1, 1930. [Class 39 (i).] Grid material is made by forming holes in sheet metal which is then rolled to produce the final dimensions. An arc discharge tube comprises a cathode 5 coated with barium nitrate and indirectly heated by a filament 7, an anode 14, and a grid G, a drop of mercury or an inert gas being admitted into the casing 1 after evacuation. Holes are punched in a sheet of metal, which may be of a nickel-chromium alloy and of thickness about 0À01 inch, the holes formed being about 0À025 inch in diameter. The sheet so formed is rolled by rolls 28, Fig. 9, in one direction to reduce the thickness of the sheet and render the holes elliptical, and may then be rolled transversely further to reduce the size of the holes and the thickness of the plate. By using square punches, diamond-shaped holes may be produced by a first rolling. The final thickness of the material may be 0À005 inch.
