Abstract

759,080. Making composite electrodes. TELEFUNKEN GES., [formerly TELEFUNKEN GES. FUR DRAHTLOSE TELEGRAPHIE GES.]. April 12, 1954 [April 10, 1953; March 5, 1954], No. 10647/54. Class 83 (2). In a method of making electrodes for electron discharge devices a sheet of metal which enters into intermetallic association with aluminium is coated with a layer of aluminium and after annealing and simultaneously forming the intermetallic compound is coated with a second layer of aluminium for subsequent conversion after the material has been shaped into electrode parts. Sheet nickel or iron of low oxygen content of about 3 mm. thickness with aluminium foil 0.1 mm. thick applied on one or both sides is rolled down to a total thickness of 0.15 mms. with the aluminium between 3 and 10 microns. The sheet is then annealed at 675‹ C. and the black intermetallic compound formed. A second layer of aluminium of about 15 microns is then applied by low pressure rolling and the sheet is stamped into electrode parts which are subsequently mounted in a discharge device and heated to a temperature of about 800‹ C. to form the intermetallic compound from the second layer of aluminium and degass the assembly. In a modification the composite material may be further annealed prior to the stamping operation. The composite material may also be degassed prior to insertion in the discharge device by heating, to 500‹ C. in air, hydrogen, nitrogen, coal gas or ammonia at atmospheric or a reduced pressure.
