Abstract
380,863. Mercury-vapour rectifiers. SOC. ANON. HEWITTIC and DEMONTVIGNIER, M., 11, Rue du Pont, Suresnes, Seine, France. July 1, 1931, No. 19003. Convention date, July 3,1930. [Class 39 (i).] Cooling means for glass rectifiers comprises a fan, so positioned that the cooling fluid first flows over. that portion of the envelope which has the largest diameter, baffles for deflecting the fluid towards the envelope, and a doublewalled anode branch which is protected against cooling. Figs. 3 and 4 show shapes of envelopes and the arrangement of the baffles. A hollow anode 19, Fig. 5, is mounted within double walls 20, 22. The inside of the glass or metallic tube 20 is blackened in order that it may reach quickly the operating temperature, and the outside is given a polished metallic coating to reduce radiation. The tube 20 may be closed by a tube 23 which is carried by the leading-in wire, or by a disc or cup. A polished metallic sheet 26 on the tube 22 restricts radiation and is connected to the anode leading-in wire to facilitate starting. In a modification, a condensing chamber is formed by the annular space between walls 33, 34, Fig. 8, the tube 34 being held by springs 29, 31. The tube 34 may be closed at its inner end and provided with an opening in its side for the arc path. The fan propeller may consist of vanes attached to a disc and the fan motor may be located between the propeller and the rectifier or on the side of the propeller remote from the rectifier. An automatic heating device may be provided and control grids may be fitted in the anode branches.
