[Class 100 (ii).] Make-ready arrangements.-Apparatus for compensating irregularities in print in which the operation of marking, cutting, gumming, application to the correcting sheet, &c. are performed in each operative cycle of the apparatus comprises a table which is preferably adjustable, a parallel device having marking, cutting, and gumming means, a movable vacuum chamber, and means for supplying one or more webs of compensating material. Two similar correcting proofs 2, one for marking purposes and the other for receiving single pieces of compensating tissue paper, are placed in exactly corresponding positions on a table 1 capable of being adjusted vertically and for inclination, and which may have an illuminated glass top. A parallel device, having a main spindle 4 with end supports which move in guides 5 in the table 1, carries a rotatable and slidable sleeve 6 on which are mounted two marking members 7, 8 and, oppositely disposed to the member 8, a cutting member 9. The member 9 may be a heated needle, and the members 7, 8 may be small tubes filled with ink. Adjacent the member 8 is a gumming device 10 of brush or pipe form. A vacuum chamber 11 provided with communicating holes in the under surface is mounted over the correcting sheet to be gummed and holds compensating paper on its under surface. Compensating paper may be advanced from two opposite edges of the vacuum chamber from rolls 12. The vacuum chamber is connected to the table 1 and is adapted to be pressed down on to the correcting proof by hand by means of a lever, pedal, gearing, &c. or by power means. During the pressing operation the vacuum is opened so that the single pieces of compensating paper cut out by the members 9 during the marking and gumming operation are transferred to the correcting proof furnished with the glue. The compensating paper may be divided into a plurality of webs of different thicknesses to facilitate compensation. Specification 371,187 is referred to.
