Abstract

<PICT:0387460/III/1> Paper sheets, cards, envelope blanks, &c. are gummed uniformly or in strips by passing from a removable work table 36 between one or more gumming rollers 30 rotated by a handle 18 in a gum trough 1, and a pressure roller 3 mounted in bearings secured to a plate 4 which may be rotated about an axis close to the axis of the roller to adjust the pressure applied. A scraper 9 of rubber or other resilient material is pressed adjustably against the pressure roller 3, and forms with flanges on the roller a duct from which excess adhesive is returned by a ripe 11 to the trough 1. The gumming roller or rollers are carried by a frame 15 which can be moved on rails 16 from under the pressure roller for inspection &c. Scrapers 22 for the gumming rollers are fixed to a supporting plate 23 mounted on eccentric sleeves 28 on a shaft 27 which may be turned by a hand-wheel to adjust the plates horizontally. Some of the gumming rollers may be isolated by cups 31 supported on bars 32 and serve as supports only for the work. The gummed sheet material is received on blades 33 pivoted loosely on a spindle 34 and resting on the axle 17 of the gumming rollers. The pressure roller may be flangeless and have a flanged scraper, or the scraper may be replaced by a rubber roller, or an auxiliary scraper similar to the first may be provided. The pressure roller may consist of several rollers mounted on one spindle and each provided with a scraper.
