GLUE'SPREADING APPARATUS 2 Sheets-Sheet 2 i I; /2 I h I H I ll INVENTOR EDWARD ,4. FOLE I tuzydmz ATTORNEY United States Patent GLUE SPREADING APPARATUS Edward A. Foley, Laurel, Miss., assignor to Masonite Corporation, Laurel, Miss., a corporation of Delaware Application October '2, 1955, Serial No. 383,736
6 Claims. (Cl. 118-246) This invention relates to a novel gluing apparatus and relates more particularly to an apparatus for applying a uniform glue film to sheet wrapping material. Even more particularly, the invention relates to such an apparatus which may be employed in conjunction with automatic or semi-automatic wrapping machines wherein the glue is applied as a continuous film to a moving strip of wrapping material.
The apparatus of the invention includes glue pick-up means, glue transfer means, and glue applying means in novel combination. Moreover, the apparatus is adapted to be operative with wrapping material of any width andtherefore suitable for use in the automatic wrapping of large or small sized packages.
Briefly, the apparatus comprises rotating, concave-faced glue pick-up disks, a rotating glue applying roll, and a glue transfer roll cooperating with both forementioned elements. A notched doctor blade or roll cooperates with the glue transfer roll so as to provide a glue film of substantially uniform thickness on the peripheral face of the glue applying roll. The apparatus also includes a guide element for the wrapping material and a gauge which operates to insure positive contact of the wrapping material surface and the glue applying roll.
The invention will be described in greater detail with reference to the accompanying drawings in which:
Figure 1 is a top plan view of the apparatus,
Figure 2 is a side elevation of the apparatus,
Figure 3 is a fragmentary plan view of a doctor blade, and
Figure 4 is a section through 44 of Figure 3.
Referring to the drawings, parallel upright frame membars are mounted upon base 12 to provide support for the apparatus. Glue pick-up disks 14 are mounted on shaft 16 which, in turn, rotates in the bearing 18 supported by the frame it). The glue pick-up disks 14 have concave peripheral faces and are so positioned as to extend be.ow the surface of the glue supply held in the container 20. A glue transfer roll 22 is mounted on the shaft 24 and is essentially an idler roll which rotates freely between the glue pick-up disks 14 and the glueapplying roll 26 and is free to move in a vertical direction. The glue transfer roll 22 preferably has a resilient surface 28 to provide a satisfactory nip. The glue-applying roll 25 is mounted on the shaft 30 which rotates in the bearing 32 supported by the frame member 10. Glue applying roll 26 drives the glue pick-up disks 14 by means of the sprockets 34 and 36 through the chain drive 38. Roll 26 is in turn driven by a source of power not shown. The entire apparatus is supported on the shafts 40 mounted in supports 42 and is adjustable in a horizontal plane thereon by means of the screw 44. A paper guide 46 is provided in close proximity to the glue applying roll 26 and is immovably attached to the supports 42. A gauge 48 is hingedly attached to the base 12 at St) and may be moved vertically by means of the screw 52. Doctor blade 54 is hinged to the frame 10 by the pin 56 and is movable toward and away from the glue transfer roll 22. The edge of the doctor blade 54 is notched at 58.
In operation, the paper is advanced through the machine by driving means, not shown, which may be either manual or mechanicai. The glue pick-up disks 14 revolve in a clockwise direction and apply individual, relatively thick lines of glue to the face of transfer roll 22 which rotates in a counterclockwise direction. The doctor blade 54 removes most of the glue except for a relatively heavy line of glue which passes through the notch 58. As an alternative to employing the doctor blade 54, entirely satisfactory results are obtained with a similarly notched doctor roll. Dependent upon the blue viscosity, one or more notches may be provided in the doctor blade or roll to provide a thicker or thinner glue line or lines on the transfer roll 22. The transfer roll 22, in turn, is in tangential contact with the peripheral face of the glueapplying roll 26 which rotates in a clockwise direction. The glue is deposited in the nip between the transfer and applying rolls and is uniformly spread over the face of the roll 26. Sheet wrapping material is supported on the base 12 and passes beneath the guide 46 and is thereby brought into contact with the peripheral face of the glueapplying roll 26. Contact of the sheet material surface with the roll face is maintained by the gauge 48, thus insuring an even application of glue thereto. The rotation of the roll 26 is preferably so regulated that it turns at a speed somewhat greater than the rate of travel of the sheet material. In this manner, the glue-applying roll 26 serves to wipe the glue film onto the surface of the sheet material thus insuring an even, continuous, and uniform glue film thereon.
The outstanding inventive features of the novel apparatus reside in the following:
1. The provision of glue-pick-up disks having concave peripheral faces;
2. The provision of a notched doctor blade or roll; and
3. Rotation of the glue-applying roll at a speed somewhat in excess of the feed rate of the sheet material.
The first above-enumerated factor permits the deposition of one or morefairly heavy glue lines on the transfer roll. This represents a decided advance over prior art means of applying a thick glue film over the entire face of a transfer roll with its accompanying dripping of excess glue over the apparatus.
The second feature, namely the notched doctor blade or roll, permits wiping the transfer roll substantially clean except for the lines of glue which flow through the notch or notches. In this manner, there is provided a means of carefully regulating the amount of glue retained in the nip between the transfer roll and the glue-applying roll. This regulation results in the application of a desirably thin but uniform film of glue on the glue-applying roll without danger of glue waste through excessive application or dripping.
The third enumerated novel feature permits a wiping action by the glue-appyling roll. Such action permits deposition on the sheet material of a much more uniform glue film than is otherwise obtainable.
