Abstract

378,434. Protective arrangements for supply systems and apparatus. BRITISH THOMSON-HOUSTON CO., Ltd., Crown House, Aldwych, London.-(Assignees of Palueff, K. K. ; 18, Laflin Terrace, Pittsfield, Massachusetts, U.S.A.) Feb. 10, 1931, No. 4160. Convention date, Feb. 10, 1930. [Class 38 (iv).] The neutral point of a system comprising an inductive winding or windings is connected to ground by parallel circuits comprising respectively an impedance and a non-inductive path such that for currents of the operating frequency the neutral is either effectively' isolated or grounded through a predetermined impedance by the former and is solidly earthed for transient oscillations by the latter, the passage to earth of current of normal operating frequency then being prevented. The first mentioned may be a condenser, an inductance or a resistance, and the second may consist of or include a resistance having a negative volt-ampere characteristic such as is described in Specification 292,110, [Class 38 (iv), Electric supply and transmission systems &c]. A spark gap set to break down at a voltage materially in excess of the highest operating frequency voltage of the neutral may be connected in series with the non- inductive path. The preferred arrangement is shown in the Figure, in which the neutral is connected to earth through parallel paths comprising respectively a condenser 28 and inductance 33 and a non-inductive resistance 30 in series with a spark gap 29. The invention is applicable to systems employing transformers of the type described in Specifications 173,606, 178,609. [both in Class 38 (iv), Electric supply and transmission systems &c.], and 350,520, having shielded or non-resisting windings 21.
