Abstract

492,730. Protective arrangements. BRITISH THOMSON-HOUSTON CO., Ltd. Dec. 14, 1936, No. 34298. Void. Convention date, Dec. 12, 1935. [Class 38 (iv)] In an ungrounded A.C. transmission system in which, on the occurrence of a ground fault, the unbalanced capacity current to earth is compensated by an inductance connected between the neutral point and earth, adequate compensation of the capacity current for all lengths of line in circuit is obtained by causing the inductance to vary through a range of values on the occurrence of a fault, at least one of which values is that which compensates the capacity current and clears the fault. A three-phase line is protected by an inductance 15 in the form of a transformer, a coil 20 of which is short-circuited over a full wave rectifier 18, 19 and an inductance 16. In this case initially the inductance of the coil 17 is high, but decreases after the occurrence of a fault at a rate dependent on the circuit constants due to D.C. flowing in the coil 20. At one of these decreasing values of inductance, the fault current is compensated. In a modification, the inductance is initially low and rises after the fault occurs. This is obtained by connecting the coil 20 through a Graetz connected rectifier to a condenser which draws a decreasing D.C. from the coil 20 on the occurrence of a fault.
