Abstract

378,410. Shock-absorbers. CARPMAEL, A., 24, Southampton Buildings, London.-(Coulter, C. V. ; of Madura Mills Co., Tuticorin, Southern India.) May 4, 1931, No. 13151. [Class 108 (iii).] A solid-friction shockabsorber includes a body portion E, a longitudinally slidable arm C, means H1, H2, within the body portion for frictionally engaging each side of the arm, wedge - shaped means 'operable upon movement of the arm in a predetermined direction for causing increasing friction and means independent of the movement of the arm for adjusting the pressure on either side thereof. The wedge-shaped means include pairs of relatively slidable wedges A, B, one of each pair of which carries a layer of friction material for engaging the arm. The pressure is adjusted by studs or bolts FS1 which press against members PM1 in contact with the back of the appropriate wedge B. One or both of the inclined faces of the pairs of wedges may be grooved and the channels so formed may be filled with lubricant e.g. graphite. The friction material may be carried by the arm.
