Abstract
377,794. Circular knitting-machines. GOODWIN, T., GOODWIN, T., GOODWIN. H., (trading as PARK ENGINEERING CO.), and GOODWIN, F., Halstead Street, Leicester. June 27, 1931, No. 18596. [Class 74 (ii).] Open-work " clock " patterns are formed in pelerine work in the process of knitting hosiery, &c. by the use of spreading instruments arranged singly or in groups. Each spreader consists of two disconnected blades 15 mounted in the same radial trick in the under surface of the sinker ring 13. A sinker 12 works between each pair of blades. The noses 15c are offset in pairs. The spreaders are operated by means of butbs 15e and butts of varying elevation 15d. The sinkers and spreaders are kept in place by an encircling spring 18. The spreaders are operated, one or more pairs at a time by a cam 22, vertically movable under control of a pattern wheel, the height of the studs on which determine the lift of the cam. The wheel is normally fed round by continuously oscillating ratchet gear and after being put out of action to enable a particular pair or group of spreaders to form a repeat, is restarted by a pattern chain &c. The spreaders are withdrawn from operation by a cam acting on the butts 15e. Each spreader may have an upturned end 115c. The sinkers which work between each pair may have an upstanding wedge portion 53 to force the spreaders apart. There may be a number of cams 22.
