Abstract

In a process for converting soda-treated tars and similar petroleum residues into hydrocarbons of low boiling point as described in Specifications 316,552, 320,287, [both in Class 32, Distilling &c.], 345,496, 345,511, 346,967, and 367,679 in which the tars &c. are first vaporized in contact with porous materials and the vapours then cracked in contact with catalysts, the porous materials and catalysts in the vaporizing and catalytic chambers are washed periodically with water or other suitable solvent maintained in the liquid state. The washing agent may be admitted and removed by the pipes used for admitting and evacuating the gaseous reagents.
