Abstract
375,928. Coking pitch. ELKINGTON, H. D., 20, Holborn, London.-Ges. f³r Teerverwertung; 49, Varzinerstrasse, Miede. rich, Duisburg, Germany.) April 28, 1931, No. 12503. [Class 55 (ii).] Pitch obtained from coal, brown coal, or petroleum, or pitchy residues from hydrogenation, or extraction processes, or from the distillation of shale oil, are coked in coke ovens of the kind used for coking coal, the material being charged in a liquid or solid state. The pitch may be charged in pans or crucibles, which may be made of pitch coke or the like. The width of these ovens should be equal to or greater than their height to prevent " climbing," and they are heated from the bottom only. After coking, air is introduced to complete expulsion of the volatiles and supplementary heating by radiation from the flat top of the oven is used to burn off residual distillation gases above the charge. The pitch obtained from the distillates may be coked to give a high grade coke free from ash, and suitable for electrodes.
