Abstract

440,434. Coke manufacture. FISHER, A., and BRASSERT & CO., Ltd., H. A., Brook House, Walbrook, London. June 28, 1934, No. 19162. [Classes 55 (i) and 55 (ii)] A hard coke having a porous " worm-hole " structure is obtained by coking a mixture of comminuted coal of low coking index and liquid hydrocarbons relatively high in asphaltic constituents in a relatively thin layer in a solefired horizontal oven. Coal of higher coking index may be incorporated with the mixture. A liquid hydrocarbon particularly suitable is a cracked petroleum residue having a gravity of 12‹ (A.P.I.), and usually equal parts of coal and liquid hydrocarbon are used, but this proportion may be varied. In an example, Aberdare coal having 13'9 per cent volatiles is ground so that 80 per cent passes a 200 mesh sieve, and is mixed with an equal amount of the petroleum residue, the suspension being preheated in a coil to about 100‹ C. and discharged through the top of a horizontal oven, the floor of which is heated by flues at a temperature of about 1360‹ C. A layer of coke is allowed to build up to from 6 to 12 inches thick, and is removed by a ram. In another example, 50 per cent of the Aberdare coal is mixed with 25 per cent of a coal of medium coking index and having 22À5 per cent volatiles, and 25 per cent of a coal of high coking index and having 28À9 per cent volatiles, and the mixture is blended with an equal weight of petroleum residue or heavy fuel oil.
