Abstract
375,045. Ornamenting cement &c. surfaces. WEITHALER, A., 3, Mittler Weg, Crailsheim, Wurtemberg, Germany. May 26, 1931, No. 15394. [Class 93.] A glimmering or iridescent appearance is produced on cement or like surfaces or coatings by obtaining a smooth glass-like surface and etching the surface with a weak mordant to produce a finely pitted surface exhibiting a light-interference effect. Where the cement materials do not contain small particles of etch-resistant substances, a small quantity of a finely divided substance such as trass, casein, dialyzed silicic acid, calcium hydrate, calcium carbonate, or pulverized quartz is added to the cement or to the binder. Dilute hydrochloric, acetic, and oxalic acids, carbonic acid gas or solution, alum solution, dilute lye, and dilute ammonium solution are mentioned as examples of suitable etching-agents. When the etching has proceeded far enough, the surface is washed with water or a neutralizing solution, and a protective coating such as a lac solution or an alcoholic soap solution is applied. The cement surface may be coloured prior to etching, and the etching may be repeated if necessary.
