Abstract

374,523. Road vehicle signals. JANMART, R., 41, Hylton Street, North Shields, Northumberland. Oct. 16, 1931, No. 2591. [Class 118 (ii).] A direction indicator for motor and other vehicles comprises a horizontal row F<H>, and a vertical row F<v> of lamps at both the front and back of the vehicle, controlled by a rotary switch D operated by an electric motor P. The wiper M is adapted to bridge a plurality of contacts C spaced peripherally, or as in Fig. 2, to leave a sector with no contacts. Thus when a switch K<v> is closed a finger of light travels vertically up the lamp rows F<V> intermittently, to signal straight ahead. Closure of a switch K<R> causes an intermittent light from left to right in the horizontal lamp rows F<H>, to signal right turn, while closure of switch K<L> reverses the motor field and consequently the direction of rotation of the rotary switch D, the light now travelling from right to left in rows FH to indicate a left turn. The lamp rows may be curved, Fig. 3, and two rows connected in parallel may be used together. The vertical rows may have arrow shaped reflectors, Fig. 4, and the rear lamps may be combined with the number plate and a stop signal. Coloured lamps or lenses may be used and the lamp casings may comprise a part of the vehicle framework. The switches K , K<R>, KL may be interlocked and controlled by a lever moving in a # shaped casing. Rear signals as above may be fitted to towed vehicles by extending the necessary cables.
