Abstract

374,345. Ropes. JACKSON, L. MELLERSH-, 28, Southampton Buildings, London.-(Plymouth Cordage Co. ; Court Street, Plymouth, Massachusetts, U.S.A.) Sept. 15, 1931, No. 25890. [Class 109.] The core supporting the strands of a wire rope is made of pulped stock, such as paper. Strips 10 of paper may be twisted into yarns, each strip making a yarn 12, and the yarns may be twisted, as shown, into a strand 14, a number of which are twisted to form the completed core 16. Alternatively the strips may be twisted together to form a cylindrical core, or the yarns 12 may be twisted together all at once. In a modification, non- twisted strips are held together by helically wound layers of paper. In another form a single strip of twisted paper may be passed through a die to form it into a solid mass. The paper may be allowed to absorb oil or grease, either before or after it is formed into the core, to lubricate the rope. The paper core may hold a legible imprint for identification purposes. Such printed matter is concealed and protected during use of the rope, but may be made available by unlaying the rope.
