Abstract
<PICT:0374141/III/1> A sign, letter, or other body is coated first with a layer of non-metallic material such as varnish or cement in a liquid or semiliquid condition, and then with a luminous preparation, preferably radio-active, which is protected by a cellulose ester or like varnish. As shown in section, a cut-out aluminium letter 10 is first given a protective layer 12 which extends all over it, by dipping it into cellulose acetate, cellulose nitrate, or like varnish. A second front coating 13 of the varnish is then applied, either before or after the layer 12 has dried, to serve as a base for the luminous preparation and preserve it from contact with the metal. Finally the layer 14 is applied, which consists of a mixture of the varnish and the luminous preparation. Any or all of the layers 12, 13, 14 may incorporate a suitable white filler such as cement or zinc oxide to improve the daylight visibility. The letters may be provided with suitable pins for mounting. According to the Provisional Specification, a letter may be formed as a shallow tray filled with cement, the luminous composition being applied to the cement surface.
