[Classes 6 (i) and 6 (ii).] In a motor mowing machine of the lawnmower type, which is adapted to be used as a roller, the power plant is mounted on a bedplate or auxiliary frame detachably secured on the machine and is provided with starting mechanism which drives the motor shaft through multiplying gear and is normally protected by a guard member forming a lever for actuating the driving clutch, the arrangement being such that the starting mechanism is inaccessible when the clutch is operative and movement of the guard into inoperative position disengages the clutch. The bed-plate 15 is connected to the side plates 10 of the machine by four studs 16 and carries the motor 17, magneto 18, exhaust silencer 20, the fuel tank, and the carburetter, &c. It is removable without disconnecting any driving connection such as a chain. The crank shaft 21 carries a flywheel 22 to which is connected an extension shaft 23 passing through a sleeve 30 supported in bearings 31, 32 in a bracket on the bedplate. The sleeve 30 is connected by driving pins and slots to a sleeve 28 integral with a clutch member 27 normally pushed into frictional contact with a driving member 26 on the shaft 23 by a light spring 65. A spur pinion 36 on the sleeve 30 near the bearing 31 drives a larger spur wheel 37 on a countershaft, which drives the roller 11 and rotary cutter 12 through chains 41, 40 and sprocket wheels 43, 42, of considerably less diameter, respectively, than the roller and cutter. A separate clutch may be provided for disengaging the cutter 12. The motor-starting mechanism comprises a shaft 47 movable endwise against the action of a spring 53 to carry a spur wheel 50 into engagement with a pinion 24 on the shaft 23. The spring 53 bears against an eye 51 on the clutch-operating yoke 52 through the other end of which passes a shaft 58 provided with stop nuts 64 and with a member 59 which normally covers the end of the starter shaft 47 in such a manner that the starting handle cannot be fitted on to it. The guard member 59 forms the clutch lever and when it is raised a pin 60 on the shaft 58 rides up a cam surface 61 and moves the shaft endwise against the action of a spring 62, thus moving the yoke 52 and disengaging the clutch. According to the first Provisional Specification the rotary cutters may be driven by chain gearing direct from an extension of the crank shaft of the engine, and the starting mechanism may consist of a drum around which a cord is wound.
