Abstract

373,671. Suit-case &c. handles. CHENEY, C. W., Factory Road, Soho, Birmingham. March 5, 1931, Nos. 6809 and 12822. [Class 133.] A handle for an expansible suit or like case of the kind comprising two anchoring plates g adapted to be fixed depthwise and parallel to the body of the case, and two handle end members h coupled by a hand grip i and each adapted to slide upon one of the anchoring plates, has spring means between each anchoring plate and its particular end member for automatically forcing the end member towards one end of the plate. Each anchoring plate g is attached by rivets g<2> to the body a of the case and is provided with longitudinal grooves g<3> in which a handle end member h slides. The anchoring plates pass under the edge c<2> of the lid c. An axle h<4> crosses each end member and carries a pinion h<5> which engages with rack teeth g4 in the anchoring plate and which is urged by a torsion spring h<6> towards the edge c<2> of the lid c. In a modification a simple coiled spring between each end member and a closed end of the anchoring plate may be used instead of the torsion spring and rack and pinion device. A rigid lip may be provided on one or both of the end members to engage over the closing edge of the lid.
