373,636. Photographic type-composing apparatus. UHER, E., 49, Retek Utca, Budapest, and UHERTYPE AKT.-GES., Kubli House, Poststrasse, Glarus, Switzerland. Feb. 26, 1931, No. 6085. Convention date, Feb. 28, 1930. [Class 98 (i).] Apparatus for use in photographic typesetting comprises a cylinder bearing rings of printing characters and an inclined light-deflecting means which may be displaced so as to direct light from a source on to any selected pattern of a circumferential row. In the form shown, light from a source 3 is reflected by a mirror 5 on to an annular mirror 6 and thence to a second annular mirror 7 which projects the light on to and through a transparent drum 2 bearing the printing characters 1 in circumferential rings. The mirror 5 is mounted on a rotatable shaft 8, a second mirror 12 on the same shaft serving to reflect the light from the mirror 7 on to the typesetting surface, a lens system 13 being provided for focusing the image. In a modification, the annular mirrors 6, 7 are dispensed with, the cylinder 11 being opaque and reflecting. The two mirrors 5, 12 may then be located close together within the drum. The mirrors 5, 12 may be replaced by prisms and the annular mirrors 6, 7 by single mirrors rotating with the central mirrors.
