Abstract

1380703 Photographic type composing XEROX CORP 20 Dec 1971 [23 Dec 1970] 59122/71 Heading B6W Light from a flash source 50, Figs. 2 and 3, passes through an aperture 210, Figs. 2, 3 and 5, in a fixed structure 208, through a selected character arranged in a spiral array 202 in a rotating character disc 200, via a lens and mirror system 42, 44 and mirrors 49 supported on a moving chain 58, and through a line mask 6 on to a photo-sensitive, e.g. xerographic surface 2. One mirror 49 starts a new line immediately after a second mirror 49 finishes the previous line, the direction of movement of the mirrors being oblique to compensate for rotation of the drum carrying the surface 2. The disc 200 is provided with three spiral transparent portions, causing a variation in the exposure position within the limits of the aperture 210. The disc 200 is also provided with equally spaced character timing slits 204 and slits 38 defining the beginning of a set of characters.
