Abstract
373,395. Railway buffers. RANSOMES & RAPIER, Ltd., Waterside Iron Works, Ipswich, and BOWTELL, W. J., 32, Victoria Street, London. May 13, 1931, No. 14198. [Class 104 (ii).] A railway buffer comprises a frame A adapted to slide on the rails c and connected at the base to the rod D<2> of a piston working in an hydraulic cylinder D<1> arranged between the rails and nearer the approaching -train than the frame A for the purpose of saving space. When the buffer is struck by the train, the frame A slides back and puts the rod D<2> in a state of tension as it draws the piston through the liquid in the cylinder D<1>. The cylinder or piston has a leak port to allow the liquid to flow from one end of the cylinder to the other. The frame A has an extension A<6> provided with flanges A<7> on which the flanges of the train wheels B<1> bear to prevent the frame from tilting on impact. The frame may be returned to its initial position by pressure fluid admitted to the cylinder D<1> to act on differential areas on the piston ; or by the locomotive by means of an automaticslip coupling carried on a bar A<9> on the frame A, and comprising a slidable spring-pressed rod F mounted on the bar A<9> and carrying a pair of pivoted levers H<1> having bevelled ends H<5> which are pressed together by springs H4 and are opened by pressure of the locomotive hook J in either direction. In another form of coupling, the locomotive hook engages the end of a lever on a rocking shaft which carries two other levers connected to springs mounted on the bar A<9>. When the frame has been moved to its normal position, the springs yield and allow the shaft to turn sufficiently to disengage the lever from the hook.
