Couplings, automatic; convertible to non-automatic; applications of indicators to.-An automatic coupling, pivoted to the draught hook of a railway vehicle, is provided with a supporting arm for retaining the coupling horizontally, the arm being in the form of a pawl and supported by a nose upon an adjustable stop piece secured to a supporting member attached to the vehicle frame. The coupling head 5 is supported by guide bars 1 working in a guide frame 2 pivoted at 3 to the draught hook 4. A supporting arm 12 is pivoted at 11 to the guide frame 2 and has a notch 13 for engagement with an adjustable stop 20 secured to a perforated bracket 18 attached to the end member 19 of the vehicle. The end of the arm 12 has a T-shaped head 14 which engages the bracket 18 to take the draught in the event of fracture of the pin 3 or hook 4. The coupling head 5 is raised by a cranked lever 21 operated from the side of the vehicle and the notch 13 is dislodged from the stop 13 by the same means when the coupling head is to be lowered. The coupling heads of opposing couplers are locked together by horizontally sliding bolts 8, Fig. 5, secured to a swinging arm 9 in known manner, and in order to indicate whether the coupling is locked or open an indicator 25 attached to an arm 26 pivoted at 27 is employed. The arm 26 is provided with two studs 35, 36, of which 35 is the shorter and is adapted to swing through recesses 33, 34, Fig. 8, in the bar 28 pivoted to the swinging arm 9, and which rests on the hook 30. In Fig. 8 the swing- ing arm 9 is near the end of its stroke, and further movement causes the projection 31 to raise the indicator by means of stud 36, the stud 35 passing through the recess 33. A similar result obtains at the other end of the stroke when the projection 32 strikes the stud 36.
