[Class 103 (v)] In a balanced double buffer for railway &c. vehicles, i.e. one in which the pressures on the buffers are transmitted from one to the other under running conditions and particularly on curves, and in which a damping device is incorporated for equalizing the thrusts under buffing shocks, the equalizing means comprises a body of fluid contained in two cylinders 8 freely communicating with each other by a conduit 7 and in each of which works a piston 3 or 4 directly connected to one of the buffers 1 or 2. As shown in the Figure, the chambers 8 and conduit 7 contain a liquid and are located at the rear of the pistons 3, 4, while the damping device consists of an additional cylinder 10 containing a spring- pressed piston 11 and communicating with the conduit 7 by means of a valve 13 having a small central passage 14. Under buffing shocks the valve 13 opens, and liquid passes freely into the channel 9 to force the piston inwardly ; during recoil, the valve 13 closes and the liquid is restored slowly to the conduit 7 through the passage 14. In a modification, the chambers in front of the pistons 3, 4 are in free communication and contain liquid, while the chambers to the rear also communicate to form an air clamping cushion. In another modification, in which the communicating chambers at the rear of the pistons contain air, a third cylinder containing a piston opens on to the conduit, and the latter piston is fitted with a central draw hook. According to the Specification as open to inspection under Sect. 91, springs may be incorporated in the buffer cylinders to assist in restoring them to a normal position. This subject-matter does not appear in the Specification as accepted.
