Abstract
372,794. Brakes. BRITISH THOMSON-HOUSTON CO., Ltd., Crown House, Aldwych, London, and YOUNG, A. P. ; Borrowell, Borrowell Lane, Kenilworth, Warwickshire. Feb. 6, 1931, No. 3833. [Class 103 (i).] An induction motor having two stator elements mounted at oppo- .site ends of a diameter of the rotor, and a rotor 1 with a cylindrical flange of conducting material, has one or more braking permanent magnets 7, 8 between the poles of which the rotor flange passes, and these magnets are pivoted for limited rotation about the rotor axis 2, the movement being limited by a spring 14. The stator elements each consist of cores carrying potential and current coils 12<1>, 6 respectively. To increase the braking effect, a pad 15 may be connected to the bar 9 carrying the permanent magnets 7, 8 and to the frame 5 by links 10, 11 so that it acts as a mechanical brake when the magnets move, or the movement of the permanent magnets may vary the magnetic damping by means of a fixed magnetic shunt.
