372,433. Resistance coatings and deposits ; variable resistances. STEATIT-MAGNESIA AKT.-GES., 18, Breite Strasse, Pankow, Berlin. Feb. 16, 1931, No. 4925. Convention date, March 24, 1930. [Class 37.] In a variable resistance in which a coating of resistance material is arranged on an arcuate insulating support, cooling is facilitated by applying the resistance material on a thin layer of varnish, enamel, or other insulating material on a metal plate which serves to radiate heat. As shown in Fig. 2, a circular metal plate 11 has an annular insulating coating 12 to which the resistance material is applied. The margin of the plate is free from insulating material and rests against the annular margin of a metal cap 17, the edge 15 of which is bent over to make good thermal contact with the plate 11. Springs 20 contact with the ends of the resistance layer, and are connected to terminals on the cap. A spring slider arm 19 is carried by the operating spindle 18, to which is also fastened one end of a flat spring 23 by which connection is made to a third terminal on the cap. The spindle 18 passes through a bush 29, which is insulated from the plate 11. The slider arm 19 is split as shown in Fig. 4 and has additional springs 24 of C form fastened at alternate ends at the end 2 of the arm. The total width of these springs is less than that of the resistance layer, with which they make contact at their middle.
