Abstract

372,176. Echo-sounding apparatus. MARTI, P. A. D., Montbeliard, Doubs, France. July 27, 1931, No. 21431. Convention date, Aug. 4, 1930. [Class 118 (ii).] Optical indicating means for use with echosounding apparatus comprises a device in which a luminous ray sweeps across a screen, the ray being narrow in the direction of sweeping and long in the perpendicular direction, a small part only of the ray normally impinging on the screen, but on the emission of the sound and on the return of the echo a greater part of the ray is allowed to fall on the screen. Light from a lamp 1 passes through a lens 2, a slit 3 in a screen 4 and a lens 6 on to a screen 5. The ray is caused to sweep across the screen 5 by the interposition of a rotating mirror or by other known means. All but a small portion of the slit 3 is normally obscured by a shutter 7 pivoted at 9, but on the emission of a sound and on the return of the echo the shutter swings aside to expose all the slit. The distance between the resulting two light spots is a measure of the required depth. In a modification, a circular screen 5 is provided.
