Abstract

371,938. Current and pressure meters. BURCH, F. P., Park House, Atkinson Road, Sale, Cheshire, and ASSOCIATED ELECTRICAL INDUSTRIES, Ltd., Crown House, Aldwych, London. Jan. 30, 1931, No. 3086. [Class 37.] A potential divider with a delay cable, particularly for oscillographic measurement of voltage, is formed wholly or in part by condensers, shunt impedances being arranged at both ends of the delay cable for the purpose of preventing reflection of voltage waves. The purpose of the delay cable is to permit initiation of the time-sweeping motion before the application of the voltage to be measured to a cathode ray oscillograph. The delay cable 5 has a central cone 6 and an outer sheath 7, the former being connected to the tapping point between the high and low voltage condensers 9, 10 of the potential divider through a resistance 11 and the latter being connected to the earthed end of the high voltage supply. The output ends of the delay cable are connected to low voltage terminals 3, 4 across which a resistance 13 and capacity 14 are connected in series. The values of the resistances 11, 13 are equal to the surge impedance of the cable 5 and equations for obtaining optimum values of the condensers 9, 10, 14 in relation to each other and the capacity of the cable 5 are given in the Specification. In a modification, Fig. 2, resistances 15, 16 are connected in series with the condensers 9, 10 respectively and the resistance 11 is omitted, its function being performed by the resistance 16, the value of which is calculated in accordance with the resistance 15 and the surge impedance of the delay cable. All resistances and capacities are proportioned to reduce distortion and to make the initial value of the output voltage at the terminals 3, 4 is equal to its final value. An equation for the resistance 16 in terms of the resistance 15 and the surge impedance of the cable 5 is given in the Specification. The Provisional Specification describes an arrangement equivalent to that shown in Fig. 1 for the measurement of variations in the field strength at the earth's surface due to weather phenomena.
