[Class 99 (ii).] A device for enabling a series of pipes to be laid to a given grade and line comprises a base- or keel-piece 10, provided with two pairs of centring arms 16, 17 at one end and a centring member 20 at the other end, and a lifting lever 33, pivotally mounted on a bolt 34 on the base and provided with a saddle-like member 35 and a pivoted cam 37 at its ends as shown. In connecting a pipe 50 to a pipe 51, the device is inserted into the pipe 50 until the centring member 20 engages the shoulder 47 thereof and so that its foremost end 43, with the centring arms 16, enters the pipe 51. The arms 16, 17 are then opened out so as to contact with the inside of the pipes 51, 50 respectively by means of levers 21, 22 mounted on the base and connected to the arms by steel cables 25, 26, whereupon the lever 33 is depressed until the member 35 contacts with both pipes and locked in this position by the cam 37. The pipe 50 is then aligned by means of sights 31, 32 disposed on the base underneath a protecting bonnet 27 and finally jointed to the pipe 51. The bonnet 27 is provided with an aperture 29 above a mirror 30 which is provided on the base to reflect the line of sights 31, 32 upwards to the pipe layer. An adjustable spirit level 39 may be fitted to the outer end of the device, and the keel-piece may be formed with a recess 44 to receive the latch of a roll of bag padding which is thus drawn through the pipes, together with cement, to make and wipe the inside joints. The first pipe of the series is positioned by resting the end 43 of the keel-piece upon one of the usual aligning pegs.
