Abstract

Refractory articles of high density are made from crystalline aluminous material such as mullite and sillimanite by utilizing only grains of relatively large and small size, the grains of intermediate size being eliminated. In one example, a composition contains 48 per cent mullite of size adapted to pass an 8-mesh screen but to be stopped by a 12-mesh screen and 22 per cent of mullite passing a 100-mesh screen, with a binder of 10 per cent alundum passing an 80-mesh screen and 20 per cent #1 fine clay passing a 20-mesh screen. Another composition comprises both mullite and alumina in large and small grains together with a natural clay (Enterprise Halle Bond) and kaolin.
