Abstract

370,382. Power hammers. MASSEY, Ltd., B. & S., MASSEY, H. F., Steam Hammer Works, William Street, Openshaw, and WELLS, L. W., 153, High Street, Chorltonon-Medlock, both in Manchester. Oct. 3, 1930, No. 29587. [Class 83 (iv).] In a friction lift drop hammer having automatic mechanism for engaging and disengaging with a constantly rotating shaft a friction clutch device to which the tup is attached the cord e, which is coiled round a part g of the shaft d and is attached at one end to an arm operating the clutch l<1> and at its other end to a sleeve k oscillating with the clutch driven part, is passed round a pulley a on the end of a pivoted lever b, to which is attached a rod o adapted when allowed to fall to tighten the cord e and cause the clutch l<1> to be engaged with the driving pulley l. Rod o is guided between rollers p on a supporting plate q and its lower end is connected by a toggle v<1>, v<2> and link x to a pivoted lever y carrying a roller z coacting with a cam 1 lifted by an adjustable tappet 2 on a rod t connected by a chain s to the sleeve k, a second adjustable tappet 4 on the rod t coacting with a projection 5 on toggle link v<1>. When the tup falls tappet rod t descends also and tappet 4 engages projection 5, thus breaking the toggle v<1>, v<2> and allowing rod o to fall and effect engagement of clutch l<1>, whereupon the tup is raised together with tappet rod t, the tappet 2 then lifting cam 1 which actuates lever y and toggle v<1>, v<2> so as to lift rod o and disengage the clutch l<1>. The automatic action may be prevented by means of a lever 10 and locking pin 12, the hammer being provided with a pull cord for hand actuation. Holding up gear of a well-known construction is provided comprising a foot-operated brake and drum 7 oscillating with the lifter arms. In the modification shown in Fig. 3, the rod o is lifted by tappet 2 and pivoted lever 13 and is held up by means of teeth 16 and catch 15 until the latter is released by the tappet 4.
