Abstract

388,459. Riveting-machines. BRECKNELL, H. E. F., High Street, Keynsham, near Bristol, and SHEPHERD, R. W., 6, Ely Grove, Sea Mills Park, Bristol. Sept. 22, 1931, Nos. 26439/31 and 20197/32. [Class 83 (iv).] A hydraulic riveting &c. machine comprises a tool carrying ram 34 and cylinder 33 containing fluid which transmits to the ram the intensified pressure of a hollow plunger 20 actuated by a crosshead 19, links 18, rockers 16 and crank and connecting-rod 13, 14, the ram being returned to its highest position when the crosshead reaches the limit of its upward movement by a rod 36. A hollow screwed anvil post 22 is adjustably mounted in the framing 1 and carries a loose holder 51 for the adjustable riveting tool 52. An attachment to the framing for use in riveting circular plates or clutch discs comprises rods 25 supporting a bracket 26, adjustable post 27 and flange 28. A plug 35 screwing into the top of the plunger 20 is provided for filling purposes. In the modification shown in Fig. 7, the plunger 20 and ram 34 are not connected, the ram being returned to its highest position by draw rods 47 and the plunger by the fluid pressure due to this lifting of the ram. The driving mechanism for the operating crank 13, shown in Figs. 8 and 9, comprises a large spur wheel 12 loose on the sleeve 54 and driven by reduction gearing from the driving pulley 5. Wheel 12 is recessed at one side and provided with ratchet teeth 57 adapted to engage and drive a pawl 60 and pin 59 carried by a sleeve 58 keyed to shaft 55 carrying the crank 13. A spring 62 engaging a trigger 61 on pin 59 tends to hold pawl 60 in driving engagement with the ratchet but this engagement is normally prevented by a pin 64 on a bar 63 lifted by the treadle 29 and spring 30, the machine being put in action by depressing the treadle. The crank-shaft is provided with a hand-wheel 65 for moving the ram to its lowest position for setting the anvils. Figs. 13 and 14 show a driving arrangement for stopping the crankshaft automatically after one revolution. Pin 64 extends through a hole in a bar 63a and a slot 63b in the bar 63 connected to the treadle. Another pin 64a on bar 63a extends into an oblique slot 63c in bar 63 and engages a cam 55a on shaft 55. When the treadle is depressed the spring 63d connecting the bars 63, 63a pulls pin 64 away from trigger 61, thus enabling crank-shaft 55 to be driven, but at the end of one revolution cam 55a lifts pin 64a, bar 63a and pin 64 causing drive of crank-shaft to be thrown out. The parts come to rest as shown in Fig. 13 with bar 63a tilted by the action of the inclined slot 63c on the pin 64a so that the latter becomes supported on the point of the cam whereby the machine cannot be further actuated until the treadle is released allowing treadle spring 30 to lift bar 63 so that slot 63c pushes pin 64a off the point of the cam allowing bar 63a to descend under the influence of spring 63d. Horizontal riveting may be effected by the arrangement shown in Fig. 10 in which the action of the ram is transmitted by trunnions 69 to plates 66 pivoted to the framework 1 at 67 and carrying a tool 70 opposite an adjustable snap &c. 72.
