Abstract
459,135. Spinning-mules. CROWTHER, S., Axis Ironworks, Royton, Lancashire. June 26, 1936, No. 18400/35. [Class 120 (ii)] In a spinning-mule wherein the tin roller shaft a, Figs. 1 and 3, is driven from the rope pulley b either directly through a clutch c or indirectly through a differential gear d ... g brought into action when the clutch is disengaged, a brake v is applied momentarily to the drum d of the differential gear or to a member on the tin-roller shaft to cause a rapid braking and then a member of the differential gear is held so as to give the slow reverse drive to the tin-roller shaft for backing-off. The differential gear comprises an internally toothed drum d, a ratchet-wheel e having internal teeth f and planet wheels mounted on a member b<2> carried on a sleeve b<1> of the rope pulley b. As the carriage completes its outward run a lever h engages the fixed part i and disengages the clutch c, then an arm r engages the fixed part s to apply the brake v to the drum d, then an arm w engages the part i to cause the pawl 4 to engage the ratchet-wheel e resulting in reverse rotation of the tin-roller shaft during backing-off and finally the fish jaw 5 causes the release of the pawl 4 to free the shaft from the reverse drive. When the lever h engages the member i it turns the shaft carrying a cam k, Fig. 4, and thereby raises a rod m and turns a shaped catch member n which engages the spring - loaded arm o by means of which the clutch operating fork q is turned to release the clutch c. As the clutch is released the arm r engages the fixed part s and through a rod t moves a lever u by which the brake v is applied to the drum d. When the part r moves over the part s the brake is released again. After the parts r, s are engaged, the lower arm w of a bell-crank lever engages the part i and is turned about the shaft j so that the part x releases the member y which is engaged by the part x<1> and turned so that the part y<1> moves the end z of a link 2 to the right, Fig. 3. The link 2 is pivoted to a lever 3, one arm of which engages the pawl 4 which engages a tooth of the ratchet wheel e. When the wheel e is held by the pawl 4 the shaft a is rotated from the rope pulley b through the differential in the reverse direction and backing-off is effected as the carriage is completing its outward run. When backing-off is completed and the fallers locked, the fish jaw 5 moves to the right about the pivot 6 thereby moving the link 7 and the arms 9, 10, the arm 10 lifting the bowl 11 on the end of the lever 2 and so lifting the latter clear of the part y<1> when the lever 2 is drawn to the left by the spring 12, the lever 3 then releasing the pawl 4 which moves clear of the ratchet teeth and the reverse drive of the shaft a is completed. An adjustable pin 13 may be provided on the fish jaw 5 so that when the latter moves to the right it engages a bracket 14 on the lever 2 and turns it to allow the pawl 4 to move clear of the teeth e. When the carriage reverses the brake v and clutch c are free from the drum d and the pawl 4 is clear of the ratchet wheel. At the completion of the inward run the clutch c is reengaged by a stop 16 which turns a cam 17 which pushes the arm o back into its locked position in which the clutch is engaged.
